In the North Carolina casino, which is run by the Cherokee tribe, the managers of the casino have filed a request for allowing poker games to be played within the casino. However, they have met with stiff resistance to the proposal from the people of the city, saying that the poker will cause a new wave of gambling addictions in the community.
This is not rare in places where there are casinos. A few words about gambling addictions might be in order. While addiction to gambling is reaching worldwide epidemic status, it is still misunderstood and untreated. It is important to stress that an addiction to gambling is an addiction like any other, and must be treated as such. While there exist many gambling treatment centers, they are still funded less than others, like drugs or alcohol. This is a popular misconception, and results in the fact that many abusive gamblers don't even know that they have a gambling problem.
Pathological gambling is defined within three stages, and can be diagnosed using these three stages. First, the gambler begins to gamble, and experiences the winning phase. He feels elated, and feels an undue sense of optimism. Then, as inevitably happens, he starts losing, and then he starts gambling more and more in order to get back his losses.
